Session 9: NREN - Beyond the Present
Predrag Pale (30’), Mihkel
Kraav (25’), Love Ekenberg (25’)
Content: In the last few
years it seems that there is some kind of renaissance of the concept of NREN
in the context of Pan-European research and education networking,
particularly in light of the projects such as GEANT and its follow-ups and
extensions, IPv6 implementation and various Grid initiatives. The concept is
rather appealing for many developing countries outside Europe also. What are
the challenges facing NRENs and their sustainability with respect to the
novel user demands, state of the art networking technologies, liberalization
of the telecommunication market, the competition from commercial providers,
the changes in the education models, and the way research is being done? What
is the role of NREN in the formation of the Information Society and bridging
the internal and global Digital Divide?
