"NGN and Broadband, Opportunities and Challenges": the ITU-D Regional Development Forum
The ITU-D Regional Development Forum for the EUR and CIS Region "NGN and Broadband, Opportunities and Challenges" was organized in Chisinau from 24th till 26th of August, 2009 by ITU-D and the Ministry of Information Development of Moldova. 
Dr. Hamadoun Touré, the ITU Secretary General had greeted the participants of the Forum.The Forum was aimed at considering issues related to new generation networks (NGN) and broadband, their role in closing of digital gap between developing countries. There were also  discussed problems and directions of development at the regional level, the ITU activities directions on standardization in this area, as well as aspects related to interconnection, interoperability and security; issues of policy and regulation in this area, new services and applications, new opportunities and new challenges of these services market.

The Forum was attended by representatives from such countries as: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Russian Federation, France, Germany, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Serbia, USA, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Two delegates from RENAM had participated in the work of the Forum: Acad. A.Andries, General Director and Dr.V.Sidorenco, Leading specialist. There were made three presentations:

On August 25, 2009 the ITU Secretary General, Dr. Hamadoun Touré, accompanied by Mr. Andrei Untila (ITU CIS Regional office representative) and Mr. Oleg Rotaru (vice-minister of MDI), had visited RENAM Association, the Information Society Development Institute and the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.  During the meeting with administrators and leading specialists there were discussed multilateral aspects of national ICT sector for science and education development, and in particular, broadband communications infrastructure building on national and regional levels, including  projects of establishing fiber optic channels to GEANT network, Ukraine and other Balkan and Black Sea ring countries. There were discussed the importance and role of government of Moldova and its collaboration with NGOs and Civil society in order to overcome current difficulties, cyber-terrorism combating issues and also – the perspectives of implementation of joint international ICT projects, that can be supported by ITU.

On August 26, 2009 the ITU Secretary General had visited Technical University of Moldova (member of RENAM Association) and had discussed actual problems of higher education organization in the domain of telecommunications and ICT together with possible collaboration with ITU in these and related domains.
